💮Key Features

  • Australian native from Queensland
  • Medium to large evergreen tree (up to 10m in cultivation)
  • Spectacular cream-white flower spikes in summer to autumn
  • New foliage emerges coppery-red before maturing to deep green
  • Ideal as a feature tree or for subtropical gardens

🌳Climate Suitability

  • Prefers warm temperate to subtropical climates
  • Tolerates light frost once established

☀️Growing Conditions

  • Position: Full sun to part shade
  • Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil
  • Watering: Moderate; drought-tolerant once established
  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast under optimal conditions

🌱 Propagation Instructions

  1. Sowing Time: Best sown in spring or early summer after the last frost, or in autumn in milder climates. Avoid the coldest or hottest months of the year.
  2. Soak the Seeds: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat and improve germination rates.
  3. Sowing Depth: Sow seeds 1 cm (½ inch) deep in a well-draining seed mix. For slow-to-germinate seeds, scarify (gently nick) the seed coat before sowing.
  4. Maintain Moisture and Warmth: Keep the soil moist but not soggy, and place the container in a warm spot (21-27°C) for the best germination conditions.
  5. Germination Timeframe: Expect germination in 4-6 weeks, though it may take longer.
  6. Seedling Care: Once seedlings have several sets of leaves and are strong enough, transplant them into larger pots or outdoors (after the risk of frost has passed). Remember, Buckinghamia prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil and a tropical or subtropical climate.
