  • Evergreen
  • Family – Proteaceae 
  • Large shrub
  • Full sun
  • Drought tolerant but not frost tolerant
  • Beautiful red flowers on long spikes in spring and summer attract nectar-feeding birds
  • Up to 5 metres high and 2 metres wide
  • Mulch around the roots while establishing and water a few times a week for the first few months; after established keep the soil moist but not too wet. Neutral to acidic free-draining soil. 
  • Fast growing
  • Good screen
  • Can be pruned to shape

Directions for successful germination:

Two different methods you can use
A 1. Place the seed in boiling water and leave overnight 2. Plant the next day in a free-draining soil mix, just covering the seed 3. Keep moist but not wet. 4. Place in a warm area, either in full sun or in a greenhouse.
B 1. Put the seed between two sheets of sandpaper and lightly take the top coat off. 2. Plant as above.
